this was the first painting i finished since like may 31st. and that makes it sound like i was doing some big thing but no. this was executed in a single morning and i even had a drawing already so i kind of cheated. also the whole thing is kind of a big drawing so …ugh not too productive lately.

seriously dudes the book rules. it’s about some faggy decadentes who dig on opium. the hottest one accidentally becomes immortal because of his doting bottom’s masterpiece and the influence of a flirty sociopath, and then spends about eighteen years collecting antiques and mentally delicate heterosexual True Loves, before killing the painter and getting a different ex-boyfriend to vaporize the body. anyway i dont want to ruin it, but pretty much everyone but me has already read it so
it’s extremely unkind to women, all of em are vacuous, dead, and/or servants, but at least partially i believe oscar wilde was a bitter flamer forced into Constance by society and so it is perhaps understandable? is there any kind of feminist relativity principle of the ages or something? someone needs to teach me about all that stuff. whatever. it’s a great picture of a self-loathing, self-glorifying oscar wilde.
i like calder but his stuff has no majesty? maybe the big ones. maybe that’s awesome, beautiful silliness (I mean just look at the circus, silly, but awesome?) executed at architectural scale
two greatest influences on my childhood aesthetics… I. Nightmare before Christmas (lol what gothy [really though i was never goth i just wore khaki shorts and a t-shirt every day until i was like... 18] but you know, a skinny ass main character. relatable! also i really like a) those doors on those trees and b) when the bogeyman dies with all the bugs annd the stitching [my reaction to B is like a really strong revulsion, which i guess i kinda have a taste for. or did at least] and II. Glenn Close as Cruella DeVille in disney’s live-action 101 dalmations.

dudes i just got back from DC. i’m exhausted. i gotta think everything through.
god so many things seeing for the first time in person. kept walking into rooms and getting so excited “those fucking mONET SUNFLOWERS” … “AH NEOCLASSICAL PICASSOS” … etc. 3 ingres (1 really good), the Saltimbanques (ah it’s really good), one of those black late pollocks (i thought they were lil), some hoppers i had never even seen in reproduction, a Van Gogh i had never even seen in reproduction (surprised me)… fuck so much. I couldn’t even absorb. Oh and 1 bacon at national gallery and 2 more at the hirshhorn. Finally experienced rothko and the other abex at full size, left underwhelmed TBH… Kandinsky, memories of why i started painting. some Cute cute cute cute Klees (such a huge body of work, had never seen any of those before) a Tobey, some “fake” Tobeys (really? You did busy calligraphic linework all over this in white? How original. And i”m not talking about pousette-dart, I think that hes totally good actually), and a Morris Graves (dont get it) and Degas and T-L and Good times with barbara and family. Identified some weird stuff from childhood watching the previews for VHS Toy Story (one). (Cruella Deville) Also met madeleine’s aunt. Madeleine’s aunt’s friend has a de Kooning in her attic so the other heirs don’t see it and get jealous. I threw something important to me out the window accidentally right when i got on the highway coming back.
and two: i almost don’t care to think about “real life” most of the time but that mcchrystal shit is seriously fascinating. “Fucking gay” “Talladega Nights” “rat fucking” “shot an amazing number of people”
